I run a successful resume business and speak to all the folks on the front lines that just got laid off or downsized. Clearly, they know they need to get out of that negative thinking rut. But some of them are calling me after already spending months without a job. Some folks are even going a month or more without an interview. So, in addition to getting my clients equipped with a powerful new resume and cover letter combination for each different job target they have, these days I have been imparting a few extra words of wisdom to revitalize their spirits. After all, I will get them plenty of interviews, though if they trudge into them dragging their feet it will not be good. So here is my summary of solutions:
• Follow your passion. Who wants to be a robot? I can not even imagine being a computer programmer assembling code all day to improve a thankless software program. Sure it might pay the bills but do you want to do it? How about your own personal Nirvana? Say a surfing instructor in Hawaii? Perhaps a Major League Baseball beat reporter? What is your favorite pastime? What is stopping you from making this happen right now?
• “Exercise” your demons. I am not sure what it is but there is something magical about exercise. It may be simply that our bodies were designed to move everyday. Whatever it is exercise certainly works to brighten anyone’s mood. I especially recommend cardio exercises like swimming, running and walking briskly. The increased oxygen intake certainly helps.
• Get out in the sunshine. As long as you are actually exercising you might as well get a healthy tan and look terrific too. Seriously, sunshine is a great source of vitamin D which helps you build strong healthy bones. Regarding the tan, when you look good you feel good. By the way I’ve researched it and it is my belief that moderate and regular sun exposure is natural and good for you. You can not fight nature, you must merely comply. Have you ever tried being angry or sad while you are taking a brisk walk in nature on a beautiful sunny day?
• Reconnect with your family. Love, family and plenty of hugs this would make anyone smile.
Why not go all out and bring them some chocolate or fresh baked oatmeal raisin cookies?
• Do something constructive! Positive lasting results certainly yield good feelings of accomplishment and self worth. Add value to yourself. Add value to your house or car. Forget about the TV which seldom if ever gives you anything in return for your time. Forget about video games for the same reason. Get some results. Earn your next smile then give it away to someone else.
• Do something for pure joy: Dance! It makes your soul sing with glee. Play your all time favorite dance music and just let it all hang out. If you living in an apartment or condo with neighbors sharing your walls by all means get some wireless earphones or an Ipod. Wahoo! Now you are really living.
• Spend some play time with your family dog or cat. If you don’t have a dog, get one. Perhaps you can even offer to walk your neighbor’s dog in the park for them. Dogs have unconditional love the kind we all had as kids. Business, financial survival and family needs seem to force us to shelve this part of our nature but dusting it off now and then is essential.
• Get out in Nature! In the midst of all of Natures beauty and fresh air it is impossible to have a bad day. Right now we are having a blizzard here in RI, but after it all settles I am going to enjoy a walk through a winter wonderland. Looking up at the clouds is fascinating but nothing beats laying down looking up at all the stars twinkling together. Man can never create soul stirring beauty of this magnitude.
• Read a selection of inspiring quotes like this one: “Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.” Buddha. Perhaps this is what inspired my favorite Sunday school song as a kid: “This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine.” Now there is a happy song for sure.
Thank you to all my Righteous Resumes clients who encouraged me to think these happy thoughts and challenged me to write this article in the midst of these challenging times. Remember to bounce back is only natural. Does a tad pole worry? Does a Birch tree have anxiety? Absolutely not. Another help might be focus on getting interviews first and foremost instead of just searching the ads & sending out resumes constantly. Always remember what White feather said: “You already have everything you need to be great.”
