Dressing For the Job Interview

You never get a second chance to make a first impression. That’s how the saying goes anyway and by all accounts in the job interview process, it’s true. The opinion a future employer has of you from the first moments of meeting and talking with you can make or break your chances of employment. Better be prepared to make a good impression.

Before your interview, decide what it is you are going to wear. Know the company you are interviewing with and have an idea of what their attire is like. If you know someone already in the company, find out if they have a dress code. If not, drive by and watch the people coming out the front door of the building to see what they are wearing.

For men, anytime you interview with a company in a more formal industry, always show up in a suit and tie. Basic black or other dark colors such as dark grey or dark navy are best. Make sure your tie matches nicely and wear leather lace up shoes. The company will be hesitant to hire anyone who is does not know how to dress the part. For a company you know has a more relaxed standard when it comes to attire, dressy causal such as pressed khakis or slacks with a clean and ironed button down shirt should do the trick. Remember to wear a belt as well to really have that finished off look. Always polish and clean your shoes the night before – this attention to detail is noticed by potential employers.

For Women, again how you dress says a great deal about yourself. Find out if you can what employees wear if you can and dress similar. If you are interviewing at a corporate office, wear a conservative business suit. A pantsuit is appropriate for a more informal office setting. Never wear miniskirts, tight shirts or sandals with straps. Tone down your makeup and hairspray but especially lay off a lot of perfume and jewelry.

Go in confident and make that lasting first impression. Even if you have sent a resume to the company, be sure to take several copies of it with you, along with any references or work examples.
