Frequent Types of Accidents Occurring in the Workplace

Accidents are a fairly common part of life anyway, but when they occur on working premises, there can be a number of additional issues involved – such as the liability for the accident and accident at work compensation for the victim. It is not only those working in professions and environments generally deemed to be dangerous who are at risk of suffering an accident at work – there are common types of workplace injury that can affect anyone.

Falls and/or slips

The available evidence suggests that injuries resulting from falls and/or slips are the single most common type of workplace accident. There can be a number of reasons for slips, with the most frequent being that floors are rendered unusually slippery by being wet, or due to something being spilled; equally the injuries that can result range from minor bruises to more serious problems, such as broken limbs and head injuries.

Back injuries

Again very frequent, back injuries are generally associated with those working in jobs that require frequent heavy, manual lifting and carrying. However they can also be suffered by people working desk jobs as back problems can be caused by poor posture and inadequate seating, just as easily as by trying to carry to heavy a load.

Electric shocks

These again are accidents at work that are fairly commonplace occurrences. Once again, many will assume that only those who specifically work with electrics, like electricians, will be at risk of suffering an electric shock – but in fact these injuries can be sustained by virtually anyone. The fact is that all businesses use electricity, and it can simply be an inappropriately exposed wire or cable that leads to an employee suffering an electric shock at work. All electrics should be routinely checked and maintained to ensure that there are no problems.

There are a number of other potential accidents that can occur in a typical workplace, these are just some of the most common types. All businesses should thoroughly assess the risks when it comes to their business premises and set up clear health and safety policies that are understood by their staff.”
